What do you do in your current role?
I provide comprehensive legal advice and support related to the installation, maintenance and operations of CenturyLink's global fiber optic network. Generally, I help business units achieve strategic company goals in a manner that is within the boundaries of the law and consistent with CenturyLink's vision to improve lives, strengthen businesses and connect communities by delivering advanced technologies and solutions with honest and personal service. In practice, this typically involves: negotiating deals and contracts with various technology companies; working with federal, state and local governments to achieve public objectives; settling the occasional dispute; and working with public policy personnel to draft or review relevant legislation and regulations.
What is something that SLU LAW does right in order to prepare students for success on the job market?
SLU LAW offers a wide array of opportunities to students beyond the classroom (externships, internships, clerkships, legal clinics, student organizations, journals, seminars, directed research projects, mock trials, moot court, to name a few). On almost any given day, students also get to hear diverse perspectives from local practitioners on a host of legal topics. In these forums, students can ask real attorneys real questions about the real practice of law.
What was your most valuable experience at SLU LAW and how has this experience helped you in your career path?
Broadly speaking, my most valuable takeaway from SLU LAW was learning how to read, write, speak and think like an attorney. Beyond that, specific highlights included an externship at a major corporation, clerking for a local judge, involvement in the Student Bar Association and making lifelong friends.
