Civil Advocacy Clinics

SLU LAW offers students opportunities to work on a wide variety of matters in the in-house Civil Advocacy Clinics. The Civil Advocacy Clinics encompass the following practice area opportunities: litigation and appeals. These practice areas are further described below.

Where applicable, students are able to appear in court on cases under Missouri's Student Practice Rule. A full-time faculty member supervises each in-house student. Students must also enroll in the Civil Advocacy companion classroom course (LAW 981).

Appellate Advocacy

Students meet with clients, review records, write briefs, and argue cases in the Missouri Court of Appeals in unemployment compensation, guardianship, and juvenile cases. Students appear in all three appellate districts which are located in St. Louis, Kansas City, and Springfield.

This clinic counts towards the experiential requirement for the Civil Litigation Concentration.

Students have the opportunity to litigate some cases themselves, with a faculty member as second chair, and also participate in large class actions and other complex litigation with lawyers from larger firms and legal services offices. The Litigation Clinic is presently engaged in extensive court reform litigation.
