32-bit Windows vs. 64-bit Windows

Many new computers have the option to come installed with Windows XP or Vista, 64-bit editions.  Just as “Windows XP” is a different operating system than “Windows Vista”, a 32-bit operating system is different than a 64-bit operating system.  You must be very careful when you are purchasing any new computer that you know which version of the operating system comes installed.  SLU recommends using 32-bit versions of Windows XP and Vista only.  32-bit is usually implied, unless specifically noted otherwise.

Please be aware that many software products and peripheral devices will NOT work with 64-bit versions of Windows.  In addition to this, there are specific services available at SLU that are NOT available on Windows 64-bit operating systems.
