Registration FAQ’S

There are courses I want to take before I graduate. How will I know if they will be offered next year?

Some courses are regularly scheduled for a particular semester, some regularly scheduled but not in the same semester, and some offered depending on faculty availability. How do I know when I can register and for what classes?

In general, courses fall into three registration categories.

• SEAT ASSIGNED, by a faculty member, or through the on-line Web Registration Form according to a seating priority. Information on these courses can be found on the Web at http://law.slu.edu/registrar/spring2008/SeatAssigned.html
• SECOND-YEAR PRIORITY, available first to those students who will be completing their core curriculum in the semester in which they are registering or in the immediate succeeding semester. In the Fall semester, this includes second-year full-time students (L2), and second or third-year dual degree students depending on when they start their dual degree program (D2, 03) and second year transfer students (LT2)
• THIRD-YEAR PRIORITY, all classes not falling into the previous categories are available first to students who will be registering for their last semester, or last academic year. In the Fall semester, this includes third-year full-time students (L3), third-year transfer students (LT3), and fourth-year dual degree students (D4), LLM students (LLM), and visiting students (LVF).

How do part-time evening students fit into the registration process and registration priority system?

First-year part-time students, and Accelerated part-time students are registered for their second semester classes by the Registrar.

Second-year part-time students are registered in the Fall semester for their Civil Procedure II class by the Registrar. These students must also register for a seat in Legal Profession. They will have first opportunity to register for the Evening Section, and may register for any seats available in the day sections during open registration.

Because students in the Part-time Program of Study register for no more than 11 credit hours a semester, and because of the compressed evening schedule times (6pm to 10pm), evening course availability differs slightly. Generally, courses offered in the evening are open to any upper division part-time evening student who meets the course requirements or pre-requisites. Seats in Seat-Assigned and Third-Year Priority courses that are offered only in the evening are reserved pro-rata for students in the Part-time Program of Study, and will be filled by students who are only able to attend classes in the evening. Students in the Part-time Program of Study may enroll in courses scheduled during the day in the Full-time Program of Study during open registration.

How do I know what program I am in?

Students register according to their current student classification. Students in the part-time program will have a classification of P1 (Part-time First Year Law), P2 (Part-time Second Year Law), P3 (Part-time Third Year Law), P4 (Part-time Fourth Year Law), or A1 (Law Accelerated Part-time Program). Students in the full-time program will fall into two categories:

• L2 (Second year Law), LT2 (Second Year Transfer Student), D2 (Second Year Dual Degree), and D3 (Third Year Dual Degree) – who are eligible to register first for second year registration priority courses; and
• L3 (Third year Law), LT3 (Third Year Transfer Student), D4 (Fourth year Dual Degree), LLM (LLM student), LVF (Visiting Student) – who are eligible to register first for third year registration priority courses.

How are seats assigned in the seat assigned courses?

Seats are assigned either through a faculty member/application system, or through priority assignment under the Web registration form. The Priority assignment is described on the Web at http://law.slu.edu/registrar/seminar_priority_system.html

When will I know about summer classes?

Summer schedules are released in the Spring with the upcoming year’s Fall and Spring schedules. Generally, the following courses are offered every summer: Civil Practice, Civil Clinic, and Client Counseling. In addition, Criminal Clinic is often offered depending on enrollment. Employment Relations and Poverty Law Practice will likely be offered in the Summer 2008 schedule. Additionally, two or three bar courses yet to be determined are likely to be offered. Generally, upper-division four hour courses are not offered in the summer semester.

Holds

You will not be allowed to register online for spring registration if you have a hold on your account. Please contact the proper department to discuss removing your hold. If you are unsure how to check for Registration Holds please review the Banner Registration Guide by clicking here.

Planning to register for Trial AD1?

If you plan to Register for Trial Ad I, you MUST register for both the large group (0 credits) and the small group (3 credits). Each small group will be linked to the large and in order to register for this course you must select both the large group CRN as well as the preferred small group CRN. If you fail to enter both CRNs you will receive an error message prompting you to add the missing component, failure to follow these instructions could result in an unsuccessful attempt in registering for this course.

When do I register

First Year Students

First Year Students and students in the Accelerated Part-time Program will be registered by the Law School Registrar’s Office.
