Phi Delta Phi Murphy Inn Welcome to Murphy Inn, Saint Louis University School of Law's chapter of the Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity (www.phideltaphi.org). Murphy Inn was founded here at SLU in 1949. Phi Delta Phi is the oldest professional legal fraternity in North America and was founded in 1869 by students at the University of Michigan. Faculty members at Michigan had complained to the students about the dismal state of ethics among attorneys, so the students resolved to form an organization committed to raising the standard of legal ethics and professionalism. Today there are over 130 active chapters of Phi Delta Phi in the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Europe, and over 200,000 students have joined the organization. To come to understand our fraternity, we encourage you to read the initiation oath, which has changed very little since it was written nearly 140 years ago. The same words have been recited by US Supreme Court justices, Presidents, and distinguished members of the bar and judiciary in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and will be read this year by about 2,500 law students.
