Jurist-in-Residence Judge Myron H. Bright

Judge Myron H. Bright, Senior U.S. Circuit Court Judge for the Eighth Circuit, will be the Fall semester Jurist-in-Residence on Wednesday, Nov. 14. Judge Bright served as Distinguished Professor of Law at Saint Louis University from 1985 to 1995, teaching trial and appellate advocacy. He is the author of numerous books and articles on evidence, trial and appellate advocacy and civility in the profession. He also was responsible for initiating jurist-in-residence programs at several law schools, including our own. He has recently returned from a visit to the United Arab Emirates, where he met with representatives of the Ministry of Justice and Islamic Affairs, the Dubai courts and law school deans and students. Judge Bright was nominated to the court of appeals by President Johnson following 21 years in private practice in Fargo. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1946 and is a graduate of the University of Minnesota Law School. Judge Bright will meet with students involved in Moot Court and participate in a lecture to combined Criminal Law classes.

Health Law Distinguished Speaker Rep. Connie L. Johnson

Representative Connie L. Johnson, Minority Whip, Missouri State House of Representatives, and Of Counsel, Armstrong Teasdale LLP, will speak about her duties in the House and as the Minority Whip. She also will discuss two pieces of health care legislation, one concerning suicide prevention and awareness and another about lupus. Other topics will include Medicaid changes and the pending health care crisis facing regional hospitals, which are under threat of closure due to serious financial straits. She also will present data in an effort to talk about how hospital closures could affect the community.

Federalist Society Speaker

Professor Jonathan Adler of Case Western Reserve School of Law will speak on "Massachusetts vs. EPA - Global Warming and the Supreme Court." Professor Doug Williams will provide the commentary. Lunch will be provided.

American Constitution Society Speaker

The American Constitution Society welcomes Tony Rothert, legal director for the Eastern Missouri chapter of the ACLU, to speak about the Supreme Court's recent ruling in Morse vs. Frederick, a.k.a., the "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" case. Professor Frederic Bloom will also provide brief comments on the case. The ACLU's role in the case and the possible implications of the ruling will be discussed. Sandwiches from Mom's Deli will be served. All are welcome to attend.

Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for Homeless Veterans

The Public Interest Law Group and the Veteran's Law Student Organization are getting ready for the annual Homeless Veterans Thanksgiving Dinner to be held on Saturday, Nov. 17 at . More than 100 homeless veterans attend the dinner and receive a duffel bag full of supplies.

Students will be collecting sweat suits and toiletries to pass out at the event. We need 200 sweat suits and 200 bags with the toiletry items. Students may approach you in the next week or two seeking sponsorship of vets through donations of cash or the clothing and toiletry items. We hope you can help.

LEXIS Classes and Study Guides

LEXIS will be at the School of Law Monday, Nov. 12 in the Atrium with free NoteMap CDs to help students create outlines. There are 6 free 1L outlines with this software. Students can also win free study guides.

NoteMap outlining training will be held Wednesday, Nov. 14. See the MySchool page for class times and to sign up. Points will be awarded for attending.

Training sessions for Shepard's BriefCheck are open attendance and will be held on Wednesday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the half hour. Sign up on the MySchool page and bring your laptop and a document to check for 715 points.

Sonnenschein Scholars Application for First Year Students

The deadline for submitting the application to the Career Services Office is January 15, 2008. Students can apply to receive a $4,000 stipend for the summer to do public interest work. The application provides all the information. E-mail Career Services for additional information.

 

SBA Meeting

The next Student Bar Association meeting will be Monday, Nov. 12. All students and student organization representatives are encouraged to attend. Dinner will be provided.

Collection Drive for Injured Soldiers

The Federalist Society and the Veteran's Law Student Organization will be holding an "Injured Soldier Drive" through Nov. 11. They will be collecting toiletry items, T-shirts, sweatpants, international calling cards, handheld games/playing cards, underwear, etc., which will be sent to injured soldiers at our military hospitals in Germany.

Collection boxes will be located outside the locker room, by the Office of Student Services and under the plasma screen. We request that only new items be donated.

 

Veteran's Law Student Association Speaker

The Veteran's Law Student Association will host Judge Clarke Barnes on Monday, Nov.19. Colonel Barnes will speak on “A Lawyer’s Approach to Veteran’s Advocacy." Col. Barnes has been an attorney and counselor for more than 40 years. He currently represents veterans as a County Veterans Service Officer and as Judge Advocate of the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers. He served in the Marines where he worked as a Judge Advocate and Military Judge. Lunch will be served.

Weekly Mass

A weekly mass takes place on Wednesdays. All are welcome to attend this half-hour prayer opportunity. In addition, Campus Ministry sponsors a variety of communal prayer experiences throughout the academic year, including periodic interfaith prayer services.
