Wefel Center for Employment Law Speaker

Sally E. Barker, partner at Schuchat, Cook & Werner, will discuss the revolutionary May 2007 Missouri Supreme Court decision which found that government employees have a state constitutional right to engage in collective bargaining. Ms. Barker represented the employees in the Independence School District case which overruled a 1947 Missouri Supreme Court decision which had found that public employees had no right to collective bargaining. Lunch will be provided; please bring your own drink.

Helping Our Own Book Sale

It's book sale season on campus! The Helping Our Own Book Sale will take place on Oct. 17 and 24. A variety of new hardcover books, including children’s, cooking and general interest titles, will sell for 30 to 70 percent off the suggested retail price. A portion of the sale’s proceeds will benefit SLU’s Helping Our Own program, which assists employees facing financial emergencies. Call 977-2428 for more information.

School of Law to Host ABA Antitrust Healthcare Conference

The Center for Health Law Studies, along with the American Bar Association Section of Antitrust Law and the Saint Louis Area Health Lawyers Association-ABA Antitrust Section, will be hosting the conference, Physician Ownership of Hospitals and Other Health Facilities: Antitrust and Policy Issues Center for Health Law Studies. James C. Millstone Memorial Lecture

Philip Meyer Knight, chair in journalism at the University of North Carolina, will be the guest lecturer, and his topic will be "Letters from William Woo: Are Traditional Values Relevant in Today's Chaotic Newscape?". Panelists include Pamela Maples, managing editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and William H. Freivogel, director, School of Journalism, Southern Illinois University. Left Bank Books will be selling William Woo's book, "Letters from the Editor: Lessons on Journalism and Life," before and after the event. The James C. Millstone lecture is presented by Saint Louis University School of Law. The Fall 2007 lecture is co-sponsored by Saint Louis Platform. James C. Millstone, a long-time reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, covered the civil rights movement, and as an editor conceived and supervised reporting on subjects such as police brutality and the bicentennial of the United States Constitution. The Millstone lecture series was designed to continue his passion for civil rights and freedom of speech.

Public Interest Law Group Ambulance Chase Shirts

The Public Interest Law Group would like to thank all participants and
volunteers who helped make the PILG Ambulance Chase a huge success. The top finishers among the men in the 5K run were Kal Clark at 18:06, Tim Page at 18:21 and Drew Davis at 19:19. Among the women, the top finishers were Jessica Flinn at 18:45, Natalie Keane at 19:39 and Helen Alexander at 19:47. The winning runner and dog team was led by Steven Angelette at 20:50. For those who are still waiting for their shirts, please contact Jeremy Schumacher (jschuma5@slu.edu).

BLSA Academic Retreat

Saint Louis University School of Law BLSA is hosting the Midwest Region of the National Black Law Students Association (MWNBLSA) 2007 Academic Retreat. The goal is to promote the success of BLSA members in law school and beyond through educating and providing the tools necessary for success. The retreat includes workshops, seminars and panel discussions on how to succeed in law school. The two featured speakers for the academic retreat are Professor Peter T. Wendel of Pepperdine University School of Law and A. Benjamin Spencer of University of Richmond School of Law and author of the book, "Acing Civil Procedure: A Checklist Approach to Solving Procedural Problems." Open to all students. Cost is $35.

American Constitution Society Panel

The controversy surrounding public education funding has come to a head with a legal challenge to the formula used by the state to provide funding to schools. The American Constitution Society will present a panel featuring State Senator Maida Coleman, State Representative Rachel Bringer, the Public Policy Research Center's Steve Gardner and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Director of School Finance Roger Dorson to discuss this issue. Food (not pizza) will be served.

Federalist Society Speaker  

The SLU Federalist Society will host Stephen Halbrook, who will present his speech, "Gun Bans and the Second Amendment: From Katrina to DC". Professor Anders Walker will be the commentator.

Weekly Mass

A weekly mass takes place on Wednesdays. All are welcome to attend this half-hour prayer opportunity. In addition, Campus Ministry sponsors a variety of communal prayer experiences throughout the academic year, including periodic interfaith prayer services.
