Ketzler and Diamond

I am rising 3L dual degree student pursuing my J.D. and Master’s in Health Administration.  Originally from Wisconsin, I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse.  I came to SLU because of the top-ranked Health Law program and the top 10 MHA program.

This summer I am working at Franciscan Alliance health system in Northern Indiana.  With aspirations of becoming a CEO one day, this is the perfect internship for me.  My preceptor, Gene Diamond (’79), was the very first J.D., MHA to graduate from SLU.  Therefore, he is very committed to giving dual degree students a wonderful summer experience.

I have spent my summer traveling to the different hospitals within the system and spending time with the various Presidents, VPs, directors, etc.  One of the best parts of my internship is that I get to attend all of the executive meetings, get to know the administration, and generally do and see things that a student or new employee would not get to do.  Although I am an Administrative Intern, I have been asked to research different legal issues such as EMTALA and non-compete clauses.  Every day I experience and apply knowledge I have gained from my law and MHA classes.  Additionally, I have been given the opportunity to attend depositions and spend time with Franciscan’s General Counsel (who is also a SLU J.D., MHA).

Because I hope to end up in a hospital setting after I graduate, it was important for me to gain some clinical knowledge.  Therefore, I spent a week in surgery and observed two cesarean sections, a hernia repair, a total hysterectomy using the da Vinci Robot, and an open heart surgery!  In addition to the surgeries, I will be shadowing a Friday night rotation in the ER where I know I will see some interesting things.

I can’t believe how fast the summer is going, and I am not ready for my internship to end.  I have become so invested in a lot of the things happening at Franciscan that I am sad that I will not get to see and experience how they play out.  Overall, I could not have asked for a better internship!
