#SLULAWSummer - Rising 2L Robert Wann

July 22, 2015

By Robert Wann

My name is Robert Wann and I am a rising 2L. Originally from the St. Louis area, I attended undergrad at Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville where I majored in political science and minored in business administration.

This summer, I have been interning for American Family Mutual Insurance Company in their St. Louis Claims Legal Department. While the department houses the litigation and advisory units for the region, most of my work is for the litigation attorneys. Their litigation work typically consists of defending its insured clients from lawsuits and reaching settlements with persons injured by its insured. These cases normally come in the form of a vehicle accident or an injury at a home.

Prior to law school, I worked for a firm in Wood River, Ill., whose case load consisted of primarily insurance defense. Having some knowledge, experience and enjoyment working with insurance law previously, interning for an insurance company made perfect sense.

Throughout the summer I have been tasked with multiple projects, including assisting in trial preparation, researching for pre-trial motions, assisting in the preparation and research for a Missouri Court of Appeals oral argument and examining recent case law that affects American Family policies. In addition to conducting research, I was able to observe and assist with a jury trial, mediation, minor settlements, conference calls and depositions.

I am thankful for the opportunity to take the knowledge I have gained in the classroom and apply it in a practical setting. I never anticipated that I would get to experience the many facets of insurance defense as I have and although the summer is winding down, I am excited to gain more experience before my 2L year begins!
