What has been your favorite health law class and why? I find health law fascinating because it impacts the lives of everyone. Health law also incorporates many other areas of law, so there is always something new and interesting to learn. I really enjoyed my Fraud and Abuse class because that’s my favorite area of health law. Our professor was a practicing lawyer at a St. Louis firm and is very enthusiastic about what she does. I enjoyed learning how a health care organization can structure their entity to comply with government regulations.

What is your favorite thing about SLU’s health law program? I’ve really enjoyed representing SLU at the National Health Law Moot Court Competition. Writing the brief and preparing for the oral argument with our coaches were great experiences because it felt like we were real-life lawyers preparing a case.

Who was the best speaker you’ve heard speak, what did they speak on, and why were they the best? Jim Sheehan was my favorite speaker. When he visited SLU he was a U.S. Attorney in Philadelphia, and is now the New York State Medicaid Inspector General. He was very captivating and spoke about the government’s enforcement mechanisms to combat fraud and abuse in the health care system. I also really enjoyed Mal Harkins’ talk about the False Claims Act. He works at a firm in Washington, D.C., and his passion for his work was very inspiring
