2000 HEALTH LAW SYMPOSIUM CONFERENCE
Legal And Policy Issues For Academic Medical Centers
Friday, April 16, 1999

Academic medical centers are the targets of significant pressures from a variety of sources: federal and state governments cutting back on Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements and stepping up fraud and abuse investigations; marketplace competition for patients from other not-for-profit and for-profit providers; competition for funding with other units of the university; increased opportunities outside of academia for physicians and non-medical researchers; federal and state requirements under equal employment and disability legislation affecting faculty, students and staff; and demands for increased accountability from funding and governmental agencies concerning how research dollars are being spent.

This year's Annual Health Law Symposium Conference sponsored by the Center for Health Law Studies at Saint Louis University (in cooperation with the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the Saint Louis University School of Medicine) will explore these and other related issues.

THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY ATTORNEYS

NACUA was founded in 1960-61 by a small group of attorneys who provided legal services to colleges and universities. Its international membership numbers approximately 670 colleges and universities and 2,800 attorneys who represent those educational institutions. The association's purpose is to enhance legal assistance to colleges and universities by educating attorneys and administrators to the nature of campus legal issues. It plays an equally important role in the continuing legal education of university counsel. In addition, NACUA produces publications, sponsors seminars, maintains its own bulletin board and World Wide Web site (www.nacua.org) and operates a clearinghouse through which attorneys on campuses are able to share resources, knowledge and work products on current legal concerns and interests.
