XVIII. STUDENT RECORDS POLICY

The School of Law complies with Saint Louis University’s policy on student records, which is summarized in this section. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), 20 U.S.C. Section 1232G, as amended, is a federal law giving certain rights to parents or students regarding education records at schools receiving funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

At the post secondary school level, the rights afforded by FERPA belong, in general, to the student rather than the parent.

The five rights, as summarized in the Department of Education regulations, 34 C.F.R. Section 99.7, are as follows:

  1. The right to inspect and review the student's education records.

  2. The right to request the amendment of the student's education records to ensure that they are not inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise in violation of the student's privacy or other rights.

  3. The right to consent to disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student's education records, except to the extent that the Act and the regulations authorize disclosure without consent.

  4. The right to file with the U.S. Department of Education a complaint concerning alleged failures by the institution to comply with the requirements of the Act and the regulations.

  5. The right to obtain a copy of the institution's student records policy. Any student who wishes to inspect, view or amend his or her education record should direct the request to the Interim Associate Dean of Students, Christine Rollins at rollinsc@slu.edu, 977-2763.
