XII. GRADING, RANKS, HONORS

  1. Class Ranks

Students are ranked according to their cumulative grade point averages (based on grades received at the School of Law) at the end of the fall and spring semesters. With the exception of the Final Ranks (see below) a separate ranking is not calculated at the end of the summer semester. Students are placed in one of three ranking groups described below. Transfer students are provided an estimated class rank based on the students in their same ranking group. Students who visit away for one or more semesters will receive a rank with an asterisk denoting the rank is based on the total number of credit hours earned at Saint Louis University School of Law.

First Year Ranks include all students who began their legal studies in that academic year, and who have completed the ranking semester. The Fall First Year Rankings provide students with a percentile rank (upper 5%, 10% etc) based on their grades for the fall semester. This information is generally available by the second week in February. The Spring First Year Rankings provide students with a numeric rank based on a cumulative g.p.a. at the conclusion of the Spring semester. This information is generally available by the end of June.

Third Year Ranks include all students who will be graduating that academic year (January, May or August). The Spring Third Year Ranks (or Final Ranks) are calculated once all summer grades for graduating seniors have been received. This information is generally available by the end of August.

All other students are ranked together in the Second Year Ranks.

To account for possible perceptions of inequity arising from the Grading Policy Changes implemented by the faculty and effective starting the Fall 2007 semester, separate Second and Third year ranks will be generated for students starting before the Fall of 2007. Since First-Year ranks include all students who start in Fall 2007, the separate ranking schema will become effective with the Fall 2008 Ranking Reports as follows:

    Fall 2008/Spring 2009 Rankings

First Year Rankings (includes all students starting in Fall 2008) Second Year Rankings A (includes students starting in 2007) Second year Rankings B (includes students starting pre-2007 and not graduating in 2009) Third Year Rankings (includes students graduating in 2009)

    Fall 2009/Spring 2010 Rankings

First Year Rankings (includes all students starting in Fall 2009) Second Year Rankings A (includes students starting 2007/2008 who are not graduating in 2010) Second Year Rankings B (includes students starting pre-2007 who are not graduating in 2010) Third Year Rankings A (includes students starting in 2007 and graduating in 2010) Third Year Rankings B (includes students starting pre-2007 and graduating in 2010)
