XI. REGISTRATION

  1. Process

Students register during the fall semester for classes the following spring, and during the spring semester for classes the following summer and fall semesters. Registration materials containing information about the particular semester are provided to all students via the web. Students should also consult this Student Handbook for general registration information applicable to all semesters. Students are responsible for registering according to the procedures specified in the registration materials and on the BANNER Self Service system.

    1. Core-Curriculum

All students are registered by the Law School Registrar for their core-curriculum courses: Contracts I and II, Civil Procedure I and II, Constitutional Law I, Criminal Law, Legal Research and Writing I and II, Property, and Torts. Every attempt is made to provide well balanced classes. Students are responsible for addressing any registration holds promptly, as they will prevent registration. Students must be registered before federal loans can be disbursed.

    2. Upper-Division Course Registration

The School uses a registration priority system to provide predictability, minimize conflicts, and allow progression through the Certificate programs and other areas of concentration. Courses fall into three registration categories as follows:

      • Seat Assigned: A number of course offerings are not open to on-line registration in Banner Self-Serve. These include limited enrollment courses, seminars, some professional skills classes, clinics, competition classes, journals, as well as other courses designated in the registration materials each semester. Seats in these courses are assigned either by a faculty member (clinics, journals, competitions) or through a priority system that is published with the registration materials. Examples of seat assigned classes include but are not limited to the following:

        Advanced Legal Research (PS)
Advanced Residential Property: Community Association Law (PS)
        All Seminars
        Client Counseling (PS)
        Forensics Evidence (PS)
        Fraud & Abuse (PS)
        Military Justice (PS)
        Moot Court I (PS)
        Negotiations (PS)
Patent to Market (PS) Sports Law (PS)
        Urban Issues Symposium

      • Second-Year Priority: Classes designated by the faculty as second-year priority classes are open first to those students who will be completing their core curriculum in the semester in which they are registering or in the immediate succeeding semester. In the spring semester, this includes first-year full-time students (including students on probation), first or second-year dual degree students depending on when they start their dual degree program, and accelerated part-time students registering for their second fall semester. In the fall semester, this includes second-year full-time students, and second or third-year dual degree students depending on when they start their dual degree program and second-year part-time students (but see section 3. Evening Course Registration and Priority.) Remaining seats, if any, are available to other students during the open registration period.

Students register in BANNER Self-Serve according to their classification in the semester in which they are registering. Students are classified each semester by their program of study (full-time, part-time, accelerated part-time, dual degree), and the years they have been attending law school. Students with questions about their classification should contact the Law School Registrar, Felisha McCaster at mccaster@sl.edu, 977-2769.

The following second-year registration priority classes are regularly scheduled in the fall during the day.
      Business Associations Law 780 (4)
      Evidence Law 810 (4)
Health Care Law Law 757 (3)
Intellectual Property Survey Law 702 (3)
      International Law Law 842 (3)
Law of Labor Relations Law 830 (3)
Moot Court I Law 897 (2) Seat Assigned
      Taxation Law 790 (3)
      Trusts & Estates Law 774 (4)

The following second-year registration priority classes are regularly scheduled in the spring during the day.

      Administrative Law Law 828 (3)
      Commercial Transactions Law 730 (3)
      Criminal Procedure I Law 823 (3)
      Legal Profession* Law 705 (3)
Moot Court II Law 898 (2) Seat Assigned
      Trial Advocacy I Law 894 (3)

      * Students enrolled in the full-time and the accelerated part-time programs of study are required to take Legal Profession in their second year; students enrolled in the part-time program of study are required to take Legal Profession at the earliest opportunity. Any student may enroll in Legal Profession when it is offered in the summer session.

      • Third-Year Priority: Classes not designated as second-year priority are available first to students who will be registering for their last semester, or last academic year. Generally, this includes second-year full-time students and third-year part-time students (in the spring registration) and third-year full-time students and fourth-year part-time students (in the fall registration). See section 3. Evening Course Registration and Priority. Remaining seats, if any, are available to other students during the open registration period.

    3. Evening Course Registration and Priority

Because students in the part-time program of study register for no more than 11 credit hours a semester, and because of the compressed evening schedule times (6pm to 10pm), evening course availability differs slightly. Generally, courses designated as second-year priority courses that are offered in the evening, are open to any part-time evening student who meets the course requirements or pre-requisites. Seats in Seat-Assigned and Third-Year Priority courses that are offered only in the evening are reserved pro-rata for students in the part-time program of study, and will be filled by students who are only able to attend classes in the evening. Students in the part-time program of study may enroll in courses scheduled during the day in the full-time program of study subject to seat availability.

Course selection and advising sessions for students enrolled in the part-time program of study are held before each registration period. Attendance is strongly encouraged to assist with academic planning in light of course rotations in the evening program.
