V. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
- Study Abroad Programs of Study
Saint Louis University law students can have richly rewarding experiences studying law in France, Germany, Ireland or Spain, through the following Study Abroad Programs:
- Study in France
Qualifying students at Saint Louis University School of Law have the opportunity to study law for one semester with the Faculte de Droit d’Economie et de Gestion at Orléans in France. This study abroad program is the result of a cooperative agreement between the School of Law and Université d'Orléans. Candidates who successfully complete courses receive credit toward their J.D. degrees from the School of Law. The program is an exceptional opportunity to experience French culture while working toward a law degree. Classes are taught entirely in French; therefore, students wishing to study there must speak, read and write French fluently. Coordinated through the Center for International and Comparative Law, this program is open only to students of Saint Louis University School of Law.
Similar opportunities are available through a cooperative agreement with the Université Paris Dauphine. Candidates who successfully complete courses at Université Paris Dauphine receive credit toward their J.D. degrees from the School of Law. The Université Paris Dauphine specializes exclusively in the areas of business and commercial law. Students must fluently speak, read and write French, since classes are taught entirely in French. Students must take an official French state language examination or prove to a French-speaking SLU law faculty member that he or she is fluent.
Students bear incidental expenses, including airfare and ground transportation, lodging, meals, medical insurance, and so forth. Active Saint Louis University School of Law students will pay no tuition or fees at Université d’Orléans or Paris-Dauphine, but will pay tuition and fees at SLU where they will be simultaneously enrolled and credited for their studies. Students must provide proof of medical insurance coverage.
Recent graduates of the School of Law may also have the chance to study in Orléans or at Paris-Dauphine. After receiving the J.D. degree, graduates will be entitled to apply during the following year to complete a Master’s degree at Université d’Orléans or Paris-Dauphine. Those who complete a prescribed program of thirty (30) credit hours may become eligible to sit for the French bar examination upon completion of an apprenticeship in France. For more information, contact the Center for International and Comparative Law.
- Study in Germany
Students may study in Berlin through the Summer Law Program in Berlin. Students may earn up to six credit hours in classes taught by faculty from both Saint Louis University School of Law and Ruhr University - Bochum. Course offerings are international and comparative in nature with a strong emphasis on business and economic law.
In addition, in cooperation with the School of Law, the Ruhr-Universität in Bochum, Germany, offers summer research fellowships to Saint Louis University law students and new law faculty. Each fellowship covers a period of up to three months at the Ruhr-Universität. To take advantage of the fellowship, prospective fellows must have sufficient command of the German language. In addition, they must complete the following:
- A brief description of his or her research plan at least three months before a proposed fellowship would begin
- Acceptance of the plan by a professor at the Ruhr-Universität who will act as advisor of the applicant
- A statement of the applicant’s income and other financial resources
The Fellowships, provided by the Organization for the Promotion of Legal Science in Bochum (Verein zur Förderung der Rechtswissenschaft e.V., Bochum), will pay the costs of round-trip travel from St. Louis to Bochum. In addition, the fellowship includes a stipend of up to U.S. $800-900 per month to supplement to the applicant’s own income or up to U.S. $1,100-1,300 for those who have no income. In appropriate cases, the Center assists applicants in locating additional sources of financial support.

Their areas of expertise include the traditional substantive subjects in Irish and European Union law, as well as several specialty areas including health law. Students who successfully complete courses at University College Cork under this program receive credit toward their J.D. degrees. Coordinated by the Center for International and Comparative Law, this program is open only to current students of Saint Louis University School of Law. To offset travel expenses, there is a small scholarship granted to each student participating in the exchange program.
- Study in Spain
The Summer Law Program in Madrid allows law students to become immersed in the study of law in an international setting. Students can earn up to six credit hours of comparative law with foreign and American professors who have extensive experience in the fields of foreign and American criminal law, civil law, health care law and global human rights. The program offers students the chance to advance their legal education while absorbing the sights, sounds and culture unique to Madrid and Spain.
