II. STUDENT HEALTH, SAFETY, RECREATION

  1. Emergency/Safety

    1. Medical Emergency

In cases of medical emergencies, call 911 and arrange transportation to the nearest hospital. If the emergency occurs on campus, students should contact the Dean of Students, or call the Department of Public Safety (977-3000). If a medical emergency or extended illness results in missing more than two days of classes, it is advisable to notify the Dean of Students to address academic ramifications of missing classes.

    2. Snow Days

Decisions to cancel classes are reserved to the University President. In the case of bad weather, students may call 977-SNOW for a recorded message regarding cancellation of classes.

    3. Department of Public Safety

The Saint Louis University Department of Public Safety is comprised of over 100 employees who are dedicated to maintaining a safe and orderly atmosphere on campus. The Department of Public Safety is located in DuBourg Hall, Room 9. Telephone numbers are 977-3000 (emergencies) and 977-2376 (business).

    4. Public Safety Escort Service

Escort services are provided during evening hours, seven days a week. Students are encouraged to call the Department of Public Safety for an escort to accompany them to their destinations around campus, particularly in the evening hours. Telephones for this purpose are located in the Office of Student Services and the Office of Career Services.

    5. Automobile Emergency

Officers will provide jump starts, transportation to obtain emergency gas or assistance when keys are locked in the car.

    6. Parking Tags and Parking Lot Maps

For safety reasons, it is advisable for students to park on University designated lots, which are lit and regularly patrolled by University Public Safety. Students must purchase parking tags in order to park on University designated student lots. A validated student I.D. is required for purchase of parking tags. Parking tags and maps of campus parking lots are available in DuBourg Hall, Room 33.

    7. Emergency Call Boxes

Students are urged to use the call boxes located in many of the parking lots owned by the University in cases of emergencies.

    8. SLU - Metrolink Escort Phone

For MetroLink riders, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) has installed an escort telephone on the platform of the Grand Avenue station. University personnel arriving from the airport with luggage can call for an escort without using a pay telephone. The escort telephone is monitored by the Bi-State Development’s CCTV surveillance system. The caller simply must push the button at the base of the apparatus, and then he or she will be connected to the dispatcher at the DPS communications office. The caller should indicate if he or she would like to be picked up at either the platform level or at the Grand Avenue street level. DPS recommends those individuals carrying luggage should request the lower level platform location. The lower level platform is located on the 3500 block of Scott Avenue. The caller may be required to show his or her student I.D., employee I.D., or to identify the program he or she is attending at the University. The SLU/MetroLink Escort Phone is located on the East side of the East elevator (“behind” the elevator). It is clearly marked “SLU Escort Telephone”.

    9. Taxicab Service

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) also has an “Emergency Taxicab Service” for students who become stranded in the St. Louis Metro area without any money. DPS has contracted with area taxicab companies to provide transportation to students in emergency situations. The stranded student should go to the nearest pay telephone, dial the operator and call (314) 977-3000 collect. DPS dispatchers will accept the call and ascertain the location of the stranded student. A cab will be directed to the location, and the student will be conveyed to the DPS office (located at DuBourg Hall, Room 9), where he or she must sign a request form. The charge for the cab service will be billed to his or her student account.
