Scholarships for Women

American Association of University Women (AAUW)/Career Development Grants Deadline: December 15, 2006 (updated 1/11/2007)

Open to women who: are U.S. citizens or permanent residents; hold an earned bachelor's degree; received their most recent degree on or before June 30, 2002; coursework related to professional development and engaged in course work for the full grant year (July 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008). Women in their final year of a J.D. degree are not eligible for this grant. Criteria for selection is comprised of demonstrated commitment to education and equity for women and girls; reason for seeking higher education; degree to which study plan is consistent with career objectives; potential for success in chosen field; documentation of opportunities in chosen field and quality of written proposal. Women in Defense / Horizons Foundation Scholarship Program - Deadline: November 1 for following Spring semester and July 1 for following Fall semester (updated 1/11/2007)

The Horizons Foundation is to encourage women to pursue careers related to the national security and defense interests of the United States and to provide development opportunities to women already working in national security and defense fields. The scholarship program is intended to provide financial assistance to further educational objectives of women who are U.S. citizens either employed or planning careers in defense or national security areas. Applicant must be currently enrolled either full or part-time at an accredited college, demonstrate interest in pursuing a career related to national security or defense, demonstrate financial need, have a minimum grade point average of 3.25, be a woman and a citizen of the United States. HORIZONS Scholarship Application

Roscoe Pound Institute/Elaine Osborne Jacobson Award for Women Working in Health Care Law Deadline: March 8, 2007 (updated 12/13/2006)

Candidate shall be a women currently enrolled in an accredited North American law school on a full-time or part-time basis who through her law school academic and clinical work and other related activities demonstrates her aptitude for a long-term commitment to a legal career of advocacy on behalf of the health care needs of children, women, the elderly or disabled. Applicant's must submit a current curriculum vita, a brief personal statement of no more than three pages, letter of recommendation from the Dean, clinical program director or law professor teaching in related area, statement of no more than a single page discussing the applicant's views of the civil justice system as a means of achieving a safe society & at least one, but no more than three, letter of recommendation from a law school faculty and/or practicing attorney who has personally taught or supervised the nominee's work. Voice of the Defense Bar/Law Student Diversity Scholarship
Deadline: August 1, 2006 (updated 3/30/2006)

Open to second year (3L's for 2006-2007 academic year) law students of color and all second year female law students regardless of heritage or color. The program provides financial assistance to two (2) worthy law students from ABA accredited law schools in order to promote in a tangible way the DRI Diversity Statement in Principle. Two scholarships are awarded to applicants who best meet the following criteria: completion of application and essay; demonstrated academic excellence; service to the profession; service to the community and service to the cause of diversity. Women Lawyers' Association of Greater St. Louis/Linda J. Murphy
Scholarship Fund Deadline: March 26, 2007 (updated 2/26/2007)

Open to part-time or full-time female law students currently enrolled in a Missouri law school who will continue law school enrollment in Fall 2007. This scholarship is intended to recognize students who have dedicated themselves in a significant way to advancing the quality of life and stature in our society of women through community service or otherwise. Selection of recipients is based upon demonstrated commitment to causes that are consistent with the mission of the WLA. Academic achievement and financial need are taken into account to a lesser extent. Students must submit a completed application, personal statement and official/unofficial law school transcript to be considered for scholarship. In an effort to reduce paper volume and photocopies, WLA requires that applications and all accompanying materials be submitted via email. The WLA Scholarship Committee recommends that the entire application packet be scanned as a PDF document and emailed to the address below as an attachment. Award: Ranges from $1,000 to $6,000.

An essay of 150 words or more to include information about yourself, educational goals and professional aspirations; how this award can help you to achieve these goals and why you should receive this award should be included.
