Public Defender to be Honored
Justin Carver ’01 will be among the honorees at the Missouri Bar’s Annual meeting in Kansas City September 17-19. Carver heads the Fulton District Office of the Missouri State Public Defender System and has been selected as a 2008 recipient of the Lon Hocker Award, given each year to a Missouri attorney who has demonstrated exceptional courtroom skills and talent as a litigator.

STL Business Journal Names Top Minority Business Leaders
Maurice Foxworth ’03 has been named one of the “Most Influential Minority Business Leaders” by the St. Louis Business Journal. Foxoworth is the director of the Office of Innovation and Intellectual Property at SLU which facilitates the transfer of intellectual property from research to industry for commercial development purposes.
2007 Grads Have Highest Employment Rate in 20 Years
Three SLU Law alumni were featured in a Missouri Lawyers Media article reporting on the NALP (National Association for Legal Career Professionals) employment survey of 2007 law school grads. Andrew Hartnett, Gina Moshiri and Beth Schneider - all members of the class of 2007 - were interviewed about successfully securing jobs after law school. 92% of the SLU Law '07 class were employed as of February '08 slightly above the 91.9% national rate reported in the NALP survey. Assistant Dean for Career Development Mary Pat McInnis was also quoted in the story on areas of the law that are thriving despite the weak economy.

Wall Street Journal's Law Blog Proper handshakes, email and phone etiquette were just a few of the topics Anne Hensley covered in her first of three workshops on professional business manners. Hensley is Associate Director of Career Services and has been offering advice to students on how to dress for success and behave in interview situations for 17 years. The St. Louis Countian also carried a front page story on the workshop.

Nic Terry Offers Safe Blogging Tips to Physicians
June issue of Missouri Medical Law Report's cover story "Web Risk: Blogging can be a medically useful tool for doctors; but details could doom your career" features an interview with Nicolas Terry about the pros and cons of physician blogs. Terry tells the Report, "Doctors are members of a highly regulated profession, maybe the most highly regulated one. With their work comes a lot of legal risk. And to a large extent, that risk depends on what doctors are blogging about."

SLU Law Welcomes Five New Faculty Members
July 1: Saint Louis University School of Law welcomes five new members to its faculty. Robert Gatter (Univ. of Pennsylvania, J.D. ’90) and Elizabeth A. Pendo (UC Berkley, J.D. ’93) have accepted full professorships and join the school’s nationally recognized Center for Health Law Studies.
Professor Gatter is leaving Penn State University, Dickinson School of Law and Professor Pendo is departing Saint Thomas University School of Law.

Newly appointed assistant professors include: Jeff A. Redding (Univ. of Chicago, J.D. ‘00), who has just completed a fellowship at Yale Law School; Karen Petroski (UC Berkley, J.D. ’04), who has been a litigation associate at Morrison & Foerster LLP, San Francisco; and Yvette Liebesman ((Georgetown Univ. J.D. ’06), associate at Ropes & Gray, LLP, Boston.

These new professors have diverse backgrounds ranging from bioethics, economics and sociology to oceanography, comparative literature, Arabic and Urdu. “This is a multi-talented group of teachers,” said Dean Jeffrey E. Lewis in making the new appointments, “who will add new breadth and scope to our excellent faculty roster. Our students will benefit from their individual talents as well as their experience and knowledge of the law and the legal profession.”

July: Mark Bernstein received the Spectrum Article of the Year Award from the American Association of Law Libraries at their July conference in Portland, Oregon. His article, "One Size Fits All No More: The Impact of Law Specialization on Library Services" was published in the March 2007 issue of Spectrum, the official magazine of the AALL .

Prof. Watson on Rising Cost of Missouri's Uninsured
July 23: St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "Lack of Health Insurance is Costly" quotes Sidney Watson on a new report released by the Missouri Foundation for Health on "The Significance of Missouri's Uninsured". "This reminds us of the human cost of not having insurance - both the inability to get health care and the impact on the health care system as a whole, " Watson told reporter Mary Jo Feldstein.

Text messages led to criminal charges against the mayor of Detroit who is seeking to defend himself with a recent ruling on text message privacy handed down by the 9th U.S. CIrcuit Court of Appeals. Prof. Teri Dobbins told the Journal that she doesn't view the 9th circuit ruling as a prohibition of text-message auditing in the workplace, "I don't think employees should feel confident that no matter what they do that it will remain private because I don't think the opinion goes that far, by any means."
