General Advice

In addition to the core courses listed below, the following courses are recommended in preparation for a career in corporate practice: Corporate Tax, Health Care Finance and Business Planning, Insurance, Regulated Industries, Administrative Law, Labor Law, Environmental Law, Secured Transactions and Bankruptcy.

Students interested in Corporate Law should also consider a concentration in Business Transactions.

Specific Courses/Frequency of Offering

  • Business Associations (4 hrs.) (every spring/day; alternating years/evening)
  • Bankruptcy (3 hrs.) (every year/day; occasionally/evening)
  • Banking Regulation and Transactions (3 hrs.) (occasionally/day)
  • Securities Regulation (3 hrs.) (every year/day; occasionally/evening)
  • Antitrust (3 hrs.) (every year/day or evening)
  • Nonprofit Organizations (2-3 hrs.) (offered occasionally)
  • Corporate Finance (3 hrs.) (every year/day or evening)
  • Corporate Tax (3 hrs.) (offered occasionally)
  • Real Estate Transactions (3 hrs.) (every year/day; alternating years/evening)
  • Environmental Law and Business (3 hrs.) (occasionally)

Seminars (usually offered in the late afternoon)

  • ERISA and Employee Benefits (2 hrs.) (every year, usually in evening)
  • Negotiation: Theory and Strategy (2 hrs.) (usually every year)

Clinics (2-3 hrs.) (schedule arranged with supervising instructor)

  • Externships with General Counsel at BJC, UNITY and SSM hospitals; GHP (Group Health Plan); SLU General Counsel (every semester)
  • Corporate Counsel Externship

Sequencing of Courses

Business Associations is a prerequisite for Corporate Finance and Advanced Corporate Issues, and is a recommended second year course. Civil Practice is a pre- or co-requisite for the Clinics.
