Jessup Moot Court Competition

Students may participate in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, which is co-sponsored annually by the International Law Students' Association and the American Society of International Law. The competition requires students to brief and argue a hypothetical case on timely issues of international law as if they were appearing in front of the International Court of Justice in The Hague, The Netherlands.

The 2007-2008 Jessup team members include Stephanie Altepeter (2L), Christie Kure (3L), Chad Marzen (3L) and Kathryn Young (2L). Tim Olliges (3L) is serving as this year's Team Captain. He returns from the 2006-2007 academic year.

The School of Law's Jessup Moot Court team consists of second and third year students with Professor David Sloss serving as adviser. The team is selected, through an internal competition, to represent Saint Louis University School of Law at the Midwest Regional Competition. The winning team from that competition then proceeds, along with the winners of the other eleven U.S. regional competitions and the national competitions in some 50 foreign countries, to the international round of competition. The international round is held in Washington, D.C. each spring to coincide with the annual spring meeting of the American Society of International Law. Saint Louis University School of Law won the best brief award in the Midwest regional competitions in 1998 and 1999 and was a finalist in the 1997 and 1998 competitions and a semi-finalist in the 2003 and 1999 competitions. In 2003, at the regional competition, Tracy Reynolds received an award for best oralist, in addition to the team being a semi-finalist and receiving the third-highest score on their brief. In 2005 the team won the regional competition and advanced to the international round in Washington, D.C.

Additional details about the Jessup Competition itself are available from the International Law Students' Association national office. Saint Louis University law students interested in information about participating should contact Professor David Sloss by phone at (314) 977-3477 or via email at slossdl@slu.edu.
