Planning Time Line - 2nd Year

SUMMER BEFORE

  • Update your resume!
  • Organize your job hunt strategy. Develop a system for keeping track of resumes sent and responses received.
  • Draft a cover letter for employers not interviewing on campus.
  • Visit the Career Library for information on your areas of interest.
  • Identify geographic areas you might be interested in if you are organizing an out of town job search. Search Lexis for alumni in that geographic area. Utilize the Career Services Office for specific out-of-town referrals.
  • Talk with individuals you will be using as references. Make sure they know your interests and have your resume.
  • Prepare a writing sample for employers.

FALL SEMESTER

  • If you haven't already, change answering machine to a professional message.
  • File ten resumes in the Career Services Office.
  • Review sample interview questions.
  • Schedule a mock interview in the Career Services Office using the video equipment.
  • Attend Career Services meeting to get information about utilizing the office.
  • Be aware of job listings in Career Notes and on the job board.
  • If interested in Judicial Clerkships begin research and application process.
  • If planning to relocate, check with the Career Services Office for a reciprocity letter to a law school in the area.
  • Attend programs offered by organizations and Career Services Office, especially those with speakers. Usually the speakers are Saint Louis University graduates and are very willing to assist in job planning.
  • Attend job fairs (information in Career Library).
  • Inform Career Services Office when job offers are made and accepted.

SPRING SEMESTER

  • Continue to check job board.
  • Be aware of small and medium firms’ hiring needs. Consider volunteer work.
  • Be aware of Faculty Fellowship opportunities.
  • Be aware of public interest and government hiring needs.

BEGINNING OF SUMMER

  • Make sure the Career Services Office has:
    • Place of employment
    • Current phone number and address
    • Copies of your resume
    • Information as to interest area if still seeking employment. We often receive calls from employers after finals
