Safety Tips

The department of public safety recommends the following safety tips:

  • Park your vehicle on a University parking lot or garage so you can reach DPS immediately for assistance by using an emergency telephone. All garages are electronically monitored.

  • At night, use the Public Safety escort service. Call 977-3000 for the free service.

  • Be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to suspicious-looking persons or activities near you by constantly scanning walkways and streets.

  • Immediately report any suspicious persons and vehicles by dialing 977-3000.

  • If you are accosted, do not take any action that will jeopardize your personal safety.

  • Call 977-3877 if you would like to schedule a safety presentation by the
    community policing officers.

  • If you must park off campus, always try to choose a well lit and populated area
to leave your vehicle. Check out the area when returning to your car and be sure look in and around your car before entering it.

  • Never take shortcuts that are not well lit or in an open area. Never go into an unfamiliar area alone. Try to walk with a group of people late at night.

  • If you are involved in an incident, try to get a good description of the individuals,
or at least the one closest to you, a description of the vehicle –
if one is used as a getaway – and license plate number if possible.

  • Always pay attention to your surroundings, and return to a safe place if
something doesn't look right. Have emergency numbers available to contact help.
