Academic Advising

Writing Support Services
Associate Director, Kim Novak Morse

Students transitioning from various academic disciplines often find the world of legal writing bewildering. To help students make the transition, Writing Support Services offers writing-focused workshops throughout the year along with opportunities to get individual feedback on legal writing assignments.

Services Available

Work one-on-one with the coordinator on various phases of writing including:

  • Clarifying and developing ideas
  • Strengthening legal analysis, cogency
  • Organizing and structuring paper elements
  • Refining grammar, style and mechanics

Types of Writing

Students can receive help on the following types of writing:

  • Memorandums
  • Briefs
  • Seminar and research papers
  • Cover Letters and personal statements
  • Writing samples for job prospects

Who Can Use the Services

Services are free and open to all current SLU law school students. First years with LRW professor’s referral will receive priority when making an appointment on LRW assignments. First years without LRW professor’s referral can drop-in on selected dates for quick feedback. Upper division students should secure professor’s permission to make an appointment. Either an email from your professor indicating permission or a call will suffice. Direct permission to morseka@slu.edu, or 977-2022.

Making an Appointment

First years with a referral should drop by 101 Student Services and sign up for an appointment. Appointments are typically 20-minute sessions. Please be sure of your paper deadline when you make your appointment. Further appointment guidelines.

Students working on larger projects, i.e. seminar papers, should allow for at least a three day read time before the meeting (this requirement may be adjusted depending on my schedule). After requesting an appointment by email and receiving confirmation, drop off a hardcopy, with your name, in 101 Student Services.

Writing Resource Library

In addition to checking out our various online writing resources, come by 101A, Student Services, to pick up or borrow books, articles, exercises and handouts related to improving writing skills.
